Does Your Website Host Affect Your Google Rankings?

16 May 2026

Yes — your hosting provider has a direct effect on how well your website ranks on Google. It's one of the less obvious factors in SEO, but for many small business websites it's also one of the most significant.

Speed is a Google ranking factor

Google has confirmed that page speed is a ranking signal. Slow websites rank lower than fast ones, all else being equal. And the biggest single factor in how fast your website loads is where it's hosted and how well that hosting is configured.

A budget shared host that packs hundreds of websites onto a single server will produce slow load times. A properly managed host with a CDN will produce fast ones. That difference shows up in your rankings.

Core Web Vitals

Google measures page experience through a set of metrics called Core Web Vitals — specifically how quickly content loads (LCP), how responsive a page is to interaction (INP), and how stable the layout is as it loads (CLS). Hosting directly affects the first two of these.

Sites that score poorly on Core Web Vitals are at a disadvantage in search results. Improving your hosting is often the quickest way to improve these scores.

Uptime matters too

If your website goes down — even briefly — Google's crawlers may visit during that window and be unable to access your site. Frequent downtime can signal unreliability and negatively affect how often Google crawls and indexes your pages.

A hosting provider with a strong uptime guarantee (99.9% or above) minimises this risk.

Server location

Google primarily cares about speed, not where the server is. But UK-based or UK-optimised hosting (via a CDN) will generally deliver faster load times for UK visitors, which improves the experience for the audience your local SEO is targeting.

How our hosting helps

Our website hosting and security service is built with performance in mind — UK-managed servers, Cloudflare CDN, and daily backups. It's £20/month or £220/year for custom and WordPress sites, and is included in our managed starter websites.
