Is Google Workspace Worth It for a Small Business?

20 May 2026 By Nathan Constance

Google Workspace (formerly G Suite) is one of the main platforms for getting a professional business email address. It starts at around £5–6 per user per month in the UK, gives you a branded email address, and comes with the Google tools most people already know — Docs, Sheets, Drive, Meet.

So is it worth it?

What Google Workspace does well

The Google apps ecosystem is genuinely good. Docs and Sheets are easy to use, work well in the browser without needing to install anything, and are straightforward to share with others. Gmail is fast, reliable, and most people find it intuitive.

If your business already lives inside Google — you use Chrome, use Google Docs regularly, share files via Drive — then Workspace is a natural extension of what you're already doing.

It's also a well-established platform with strong deliverability and good spam filtering, so emails land reliably — far more reliably than they would with a cheap email hosting provider.

Why we tend to recommend Microsoft 365 instead

For most small business clients we work with in South Wales, we recommend Microsoft 365. The reason is simple: most people are already familiar with Word, Excel, and Outlook. There's no learning curve. Their invoices are already in Word, their spreadsheets are already in Excel, and Outlook works the way most people expect email to work.

When you're running a business, switching to an entirely new set of tools adds friction that most people don't want. Microsoft 365 removes that problem.

The honest answer

Both are solid options. Both are far better than a free Gmail or Hotmail address. The right choice comes down to what your business already uses.

If you're deep in the Google ecosystem, Workspace is a sensible choice. If you use Word and Excel daily and want the familiar Outlook experience, Microsoft 365 will feel like a natural fit.
