A new website going live is exciting. But the first few weeks can feel anticlimactic — you're live, but the phone isn't ringing yet. Here's a realistic picture of what the first three months look like and what's normal.
Month one: indexing and foundations
In the first few weeks, Google is discovering and indexing your new site. This process varies — it can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks depending on how your site is set up and whether it's been submitted to Google Search Console.
During this phase, you won't see much traffic from organic search. That's normal. Google needs time to understand what your site is about, assess its quality, and decide where to rank it.
What matters most in month one:
- Google Search Console is set up and your sitemap submitted
- All pages are indexed correctly with no technical errors blocking the crawl
- Your Google Business Profile is live and linked to your website
If you're on a Managed Starter Website, we handle the Search Console setup and make sure Google can find everything from day one. Two new pages are also added in that first month, expanding your site's footprint immediately.
Month two: early rankings appear
By month two, your site should start appearing in search results for your business name and some longer, more specific searches. Don't expect to rank for competitive terms like "web designer Cardiff" in month two — those take longer.
What you should see:
- Your business name returning your website in results
- Early impressions data in Google Search Console
- First signs of organic traffic, even if modest
The two new pages added that month will start to get indexed, giving Google more content to work with.
Month three: momentum builds
By month three, a well-set-up website should be seeing steady improvement. Ranking for local, lower-competition searches — your town, your specific service — is realistic by this point.
If you've paired your website with our local SEO service, month three is often where you start to see meaningful movement. Fresh content being added consistently, combined with an active SEO campaign, accelerates results significantly.
What you can do to help
- Ask customers for Google reviews — Reviews on your Google Business Profile send strong local trust signals
- Share your site on social media — Early traffic signals matter
- Respond to enquiries quickly — Early conversions tell Google your site is relevant
- Suggest page topics — Each new page you request (or that we recommend from keyword research) is another ranking opportunity
Be realistic, but stay consistent
A website isn't a switch you flip. It's an asset that builds value over time. Three months is the beginning. Six months is where real results start to show. A year in, a consistently managed and growing website becomes one of the most reliable sources of new enquiries in your business.
