Is Your Product Business Ready to Start Selling Online?

20 May 2026 By Nathan Constance

There's rarely a perfect moment to launch an online shop. But there are a few things that genuinely need to be in place for it to work — and a few things that people assume they need but actually don't.

What you actually need

A clear product or service range — you need to know what you're selling, how many variants or options exist, and what the pricing looks like. An online shop works best when the product range is defined, even if it grows over time.

Product images — this is the one that most clients underestimate. Poor product images will undermine even the best-built shop. You don't need a professional photoshoot for everything, but you do need clear, consistent images for each product.

A way to fulfil orders — the shop can handle the sales, but you still need to package and send orders, or deliver services. Having a clear fulfilment process before you launch means the shop can scale without chaos.

A payment method set up — whether that's Stripe, PayPal, or another gateway, this needs to be in place before launch.

What you don't need

You don't need everything perfect before starting. Dozens of products can be added over time. SEO can be built up gradually. The design can be refined.

The shops that struggle are the ones waiting for perfection before launching. The ones that succeed tend to start with what they have and improve from there.

Questions worth asking yourself

When we start an ecommerce project, the first things we ask are: what do you want to sell, how many products or service variants do we need to set up, do you have images ready, and are there any specific features the order process needs? The answers to those questions shape everything that follows.
