What Product Information Do You Need Before Building an Online Shop?

20 May 2026 By Nathan Constance

The most common delay in an ecommerce build isn't the development — it's waiting for product information. Getting it ready before the project starts means the build can move quickly from the moment it begins.

Product images

This is non-negotiable and the most common bottleneck. Every product needs at least one clear image, ideally on a clean background. Multiple angles or lifestyle shots are better, but the minimum is one image that shows the product clearly.

Poor images don't just slow the build — they hurt sales. Customers can't touch or try products online, so the image is doing all the work. It needs to be good.

Product names and descriptions

Each product needs a name and a description that clearly explains what it is, what it's for, and what makes it worth buying. Generic descriptions copied from suppliers won't help you rank on Google and won't persuade customers. Short, specific, and honest is better than long and vague.

Pricing

Every product needs a price, including any VAT implications if relevant to your business. If products have different pricing based on variants, this needs to be mapped out per variant.

Variants and options

If products come in different sizes, colours, materials, or with customisable options, these need to be documented before the build. Each variant needs its own price, stock level, and ideally its own image where relevant.

For example, a clothing shop selling a t-shirt in five colours and three sizes needs 15 combinations mapped out. That's straightforward — but it needs to be done before the developer starts, not after.

Stock levels

If you're selling physical products with limited stock, initial stock levels are needed for setup. If your stock is effectively unlimited (digital products, made-to-order), this is simpler.
