When Does a Small Business Need a Custom Ecommerce Website?

20 May 2026 By Nathan Constance

One of the questions we get asked fairly regularly is whether a business actually needs a custom-built ecommerce site or whether something simpler would work. It's a fair question — custom development costs more and takes longer, so it needs to be justified.

When a simpler setup is fine

If you're selling a focused product range, have straightforward shipping requirements, and don't need anything unusual in the order process, a well-configured WooCommerce or SureCart setup on WordPress will handle it without needing to build anything from scratch. These platforms are capable, well-tested, and cover the needs of most small businesses.

Most of the ecommerce projects we take on fall into this category. The client needs a professional shop that works well, not necessarily one built entirely bespoke.

When custom development makes sense

Unusual order workflows — if your checkout needs to do something that standard platforms don't support out of the box, custom development is probably needed. This might be a multi-step configuration process, integration with a third-party system, or a complex product builder.

Specific integrations — connecting your shop to a stock management system, a CRM, a booking platform, or a specific payment provider that isn't natively supported will often require custom work.

Scale — very large catalogues with complex variant structures, multiple currencies, or specific performance requirements tend to push beyond what standard setups handle well.

Brand and UX requirements — if your product experience needs to be completely unique and a standard theme won't get you there, a custom front-end is the answer.

The honest advice

Start with what does the job. Build in flexibility for the future. Most businesses don't need fully custom ecommerce — they need a solid, well-structured shop that's easy to manage. If your requirements are straightforward, don't pay for complexity you don't need.
